Heading to be a thing of the past in 10-15 years?

According to Ryan Mason on the BBC sports pages.

What’s your thoughts?

It’s sad that some people have got dementia due to, possibly, heading a ball but once again it is a tiny fraction of players. So tiny in fact it couldn’t even be worked out.

If heading is banned then, for me, football will be finished.

More research needs to be done. A few high-profile old footballers in the news doesn't make it 'common' as such - and it's not unique to them. Once numbers are known, more research needs to be done about differences in balls, frequency of heading etc.

It's not as simple as "ban heading". I hope!

More research needs to be done
The older players suffering ... Astle , Nobby Stiles , Martin Peters etc are all from the era of heavy balls ... so need to find out what has happened to players post then up to the lighter balls of the modern day.
Suspect there will be more restrictions on small children but heading will continue in the senior game.
The bad head injuries (Mason himself, Raul Jiminez) have been head clashes.
These are accidental but think there will be more of a crackdown on elbowing cunts like BENTEKE who should have another dozen games added to his ban.

Sport is dangerous....(well apart from Golf and tennis which is BENT)... but rewading... you are never going to nullify the dangers so it's all about balance.. I feel the balance is about right in most sports... take heading out and that's it... the game is finished...

If it happens in the professional game, then amature football will become it's own entirely separate sport.

Lots of big compensation cases on the books and hanging around
American football paid out and settle to get it out of the way.
Did see a report about he lighter ball are more dangerous due to the speed they can travel at.
Yes hate to think what the game will be like in ten years time.
Hopefully Most of on here will be in a home just looking forward to a bed bath by then.

Perhaps cut down/restrict/ban heading in training, but allow in matches.

No boxing fan, but I believe headguards are used in sparring and in actual bouts in the Olympics? Although not perfect, could these headguards be modified, for use in training in football? Or the headguard like Petr Cech used, post that nasty head injury he had.

Don't know the level of dementia in former boxers, but thought it would be more apparent, given the pounding fighter's heads must take. Perhaps the head guards do work? Or are head punches limited in sparring/training?

How about we let people make a choice?

If you play football there is a risk of injury and various other ailments.

Or you can play safe and take up knitting. But be sure to file down the end of the needles in case you pierce a lung with them.

It's obviously a major concern but I guess you could say the same about MND in Rugby with several high profile players being affected and indeed Steve Thompson the ex England player has recently been diagnosed with dementia and is leading a group of retired rugby players taking legal action against the RFU.

Not sure where I saw it but a recent article suggested that whilst you can limit kids heading the ball in training that itself could be dangerous because the correct technique might not be learnt and heading a football badly may cause as many problems.

So far Geoff Hurst and Roger Hunt have avoided getting ill with dementia and both were forwards so it suggests many variables come into play but as others have said much more research needs to be done.

In one bill.... anyone ... at any level... that has ever stepped on a football field... a rugby field... or a boxing ring knows the dangers. It should be a personal choice.

Football as we knew it 20 years ago is finished. End of.

Everything that has happened since has reduced it to a watered down version of it. Removing heading will just be another step in that process.

As always with these things they concentrate on the cases of it. Not the cases of not.

How many hundreds of players have retired that haven't had dementia compared to ones that have?

Not saying I don't think there's any substance to it but to me its a bit like changing the colour of the ocean to match a green rock pool.

Yes, players know that sport has risks but none of them imagined playing football would make them susceptible to dementia.

Of course Northern is fiercely protective of BENT-eke as being fisted by big black men is one of his most cherished hobbies.

Doesn't the headgear in boxing have it's downsides with the way the brain is moved whilst wearing it? Might be thinking something totally different but sure I read that's why it isn't worn in professional bouts.
